Yesterday evening was the premiere of HBO’s new vampire series True Blood. New Orleans is the setting of this vampire story and its hero is Sookie Stackhouse a waitress at Merlotte’s bar and griddle. Sookie is played by Oscar winning actress Anna Paquin of the Piano and X-Men fame.

But Sookie is not your classic waitress she has got the ability to read peoples’s thoughts. And in this time vampires have come out of the closet so to speak. Vampires are living their lives in the open. With this new manmade blood perfected by the Japanese there isn’t any longer a need for vampires to eat humans.

In the True Blood premiere a vampire walks into the bar and is seated in Sookie’s station. Sookie is instantly drawn to him and that is’s when the fun begins.

I believed last night’s episode of True Blood was quite comical. This new take on the vampire genre is unique and engaging. If you’re looking for your typical run of the mill vampire tale you will be nicely surprised with something that’s different. The producers and writers have made a concentrated effort not to be a tale built on vampire clichs.

Sookie your southern heroine is vibrant, inviting and clever. Bill the vampire is of course dark, puzzling and ominous. You also have a bunch of supporting characters and I do mean characters that definitely bring something to the table. The “flaming” cook Lafayette Reynolds is sure to bring you some guffaws this season if you like raunchy humor. There are villainous characters in True Blood I am sure you are going to like to hate.
