How could anyone find him likable as a hero? But beyond all of this is a simple fact, this sequel fails to do what every sequel must i.e. expand on the original and take the premise into uncharted territory. In Iron Man 2, Tony Stark’s ego swells to enormous levels. Written as some kind of Steve Jobs meets Richard Branson amalgam in a superhero costume, Robert Downey’s wise-ass treatment of the character (still at tangents to what he represents in the original comics) seems self absorbed and cheeky.

The story puts Stark in mortal danger; the miniature arc reactor that keeps him alive is now poisoning his body, discharging lethal toxins that weaken him and leave limited time to find a cure. Stripped down in this second outing to its bare essentials – one liners and scant cartoonish action – the films defects (glaringly obvious even in the first) conspicuously swell and rise to the surface.

Amidst this he finds himself embroiled in a wrangle with the US government over the ownership of the Iron Man armour and what it represents (weapon or instrument of peace). If all of this weren’t enough, he is threatened by the random appearance of Mickey Rourke’s Ivan Vanko, who as Whiplash thumps Start and his Iron Man armour in the movies best scene, set in an over-crowded Monaco racetrack.

Once the initial dust has settled though, the film turns into a self absorbed, faux character study. This superhero Bucket List setup, where our hero may be dying and therefore disregards all concerns about his image and worldly perception, does not make for good entertainment.

Even with all its flaws, the original film never sank to a level where it didn’t amuse us, whether it was in exploring (but also exploiting) the socio-political landscape of the war on terror or Stark’s guilt-stricken conscience, bruised by the extent of his organizations exploits. Because director Jon Favreau is no Sam Raimi, even his attempts at parodying the character (ala Spiderman 3) in self deprecation mode – with Tony Start dancing around in full armour on his birthday – feels embarrassingly unfunny. For action junkies, the cluttered night time scenes with Stark and Jim Rhodes (underwhelming Don Cheadle in armour as War Machine) lack the aerial panache of Iron Man fighting it out with Jet Fighters from the original.

The film makes one fact glaringly obvious; comic book movies are not comic books themselves, they are movies and are expected to function in ways that films do. That Iron Man 2 doesn’t is a failure that stems out of its short-sightedness to connect itself to something bigger and greater. Intended as a tie in to the upcoming, proposed (and so far non- existent) Avengers movie, it instead becomes filler for it.

The movies tone implies it is a setup for the teams ultimate formation, and the blink and miss appearance of Captain America’s shield and Thor’s hammer, intended to provide drug like highs in audiences viewing pleasure, only confirms this observation. This is not a film but bait for a much bigger commercial franchise on the horizon and depending on how you see it, you will either enjoy it or feel duped by it.

With the world now aware of his dual life as the armored superhero Iron Man, billionaire inventor Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) faces pressure from the government, the press, and the public to share his technology with the military.

Unwilling to let go of his invention, Stark, along with Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), and James “Rhodey” Rhodes (Don Cheadle) at his side, must forge new alliances — and confront powerful enemies. Robert Downey Jr. is magnificent in his role. This Tony Stark is like the new role model; girls throw themselves at him & guys wanna be like him.

His humor is always on the spot and his charms are flawless. His screen presence and how he makes a scene come alive is the major battery that makes this an enjoyable film. Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer is his usual effervescent self, and the acting ability of Scarlett Johansson, playing Stark’s beautiful assistant Natalie, continues to astound.

The story is never clunky or slow, the dialogue is intelligent, fast paced, extremely funny, and even occasionally poignant. There are more on the mark jokes in this movie than a dozen recent Hollywood comedies. Jon Favreau who is both a great actor, comedian, and is also the director of the movie did a great job in making this sequel spectacular and continuously fun to watch.

The most nail-biting and inventive sequence of the movie comes about 20 minutes into the movie – at the Grand Prix scene where Ivan causes some spectacular mayhem and destruction. The story itself is told in a masterful, crisp manner.

It utilizes great dialogue that’s witty, perfect use of humor yet again, advancement and complex characterization all the way through. Add the huge comic book style slugfests that were lacking from the first and you have what ten years from now people will be calling the best sequel of the decade. This is truly movie-making of the highest order and it easily deserves all the praise it has generated from both fans and critics alike.

Writer Justin Theroux and director Jon Favreau (who also plays one of Stark’s assistants) have crafted a fantastic sequel that is a cut above the typical Hollywood CGI blockbuster and surpasses the original with style, wit, flair and intelligence.

Iron Man 2 is great. It’s well-written, well-acted, and simultaneously a loving throwback to comic book norm and a break from recent tradition. Excellent story, visual effects, action, all of it combined masterfully to create a great film that delivers entertainment and style throughout, without sacrificing a good plot. It has all the right elements and the cool elements in a proper balance making it fun yet not dumb.The best Marvel movie I have seen in a while.

Iron Man was arguably one of the best superhero film of this decade, and a proper rival to DC comics’ leading guy. Yes, it wasn’t a sophisticated social study like The Dark Knight, and it had some really cheesy plot points. Despite its flaws, it was a light-hearted, pop-culture-heavy popcorn flick which also had guts to tackle on a masked vigilante clich; the protagonist revealed its alter-ego! It was the coolest superhero movie till Kick-Ass, for sure. Iron Man 2 is a great flick, not doubt about it. But, unfortunately, it fails to live up to hype and expectations of the first Iron Man.

There were enjoyable action scenes in Iron Man 2. However, they didn’t feel as compelling as the first one. Through each and every action scene, it’s easily predictable that Iron Man will just win, so that does take out most of the enjoyment from them.

There is a lot of humorous and satisfying dialogue throughout. This is probably mainly due to the stellar cast. Robert Downey is perfect, again! Sam Rockwell was probably my favourite actor in this movie as he mixes evil and comedy up very nicely. Most people didn’t like him because of his attitude, but personally, he’s acting is wonderful.

ScarJo is sexy, but that’s about it. She isn’t really given much to work with and the one long action scene she is provided with seems too forced and clichd to have any powerful affect. Don Cheadle’s just there, he’s not great and he’s not bad, nothing too fancy about him.

Samuel L. Jackson is provided with very little screen time, but I assure you, he delivers just like you would expect him to deliver. The ring on the tone of his voice is impeccable.

Blame the writers on that one. Mickey Rourke is a fantastic villain and he really had me satisfied in every scene, but it was quite unfortunate how quickly and easily he lost the final battle. Using an actor with so much potential, but failing to use him to his full potential, that’s just a shame.

That’s the acting side of it. Right about now, I’d probably give the movie an 8. But the biggest problem Iron Man 2 had is, in my opinion, the lack of continuing the storyline.

Yet, in the end, a storyline that was built up significantly from the beginning and the middle had hardly any affect towards the end, if any. A storyline was introduced with Tony’s father and Rourke’s father. It was mentioned here and there. Samuel L. Jackson also played particular attention to Tony’s father. It’s almost like it was forgotten about and was merely introduced to by time. That was disappointing.

Overall, Iron Man 2 will satisfy your hunger, but it will leave the dessert compartment empty and unsatisfied as it lacks many of the elements that made Iron Man 1 such a big surprise.

Shot with a hand-held camera, the film is full of beautiful visuals – as well as nightmarish visions and will amaze you from the very moment the Wild Things appear on the screen. They look like cuddly puppets in places – but Carol’s temperamental behaviour and tantrums which rock Max’s world are brilliantly brought to life by the vocal work of James Gandolfini of Sopranos fame. In fact, it’s possible to say Gandolfini’s Carol is a creature version of his Tony Soprano – charming and charismatic but with the capability of turning at just the bat of an eyelid.

Sendak’s great gift to readers, old as well as young, is the seriousness with which he presents even the wildest mayhem, the deepest contradictions in human (and Wild Thing) behavior; the author empathizes with fantasists. In his transcendent movie adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are, Spike Jonze not only respects the original text but also honors movie lovers with the same clarity of vision. This is one of the year’s best.

“The Lovely Bones” centers on a young girl who has been murdered and watches over her family – and her killer – from heaven. She must weigh her desire for vengeance against her desire for her family to heal. The Lovely Bones is a 2009 drama film directed by Peter Jackson. It is a film adaptation of the award-winning and best-selling 2002 novel of the same name by Alice Sebold.The film stars Saoirse Ronan in the lead role as Susie Salmon, along with Mark Wahlberg and Rachel Weisz, as her parents Jack and Abigail Salmon respectively, in supporting roles.

In 1973, Susie Salmon (Ronan), a 14-year-old girl living in Norristown, Pennsylvania, dreams of becoming a famous photographer. On December 6, Ray Singh (Reece Ritchie), a boy Susie has had a crush on, approaches her at her locker and slips a note into her textbook. He asks her out for the following Saturday and attempts to kiss her, but they are interrupted by a teacher (Thomas McCarthy) scolding a fellow classmate, Ruth Conners, (Carolyn Dando).

As Susie is walking home from school, she runs into her neighbor, George Harvey (Stanley Tucci), who coaxes her into seeing an underground den that he says he has built for the neighborhood children. While in the den, Susie becomes uncomfortable in Harvey’s presence and tries to leave; when he restrains her, she kicks him in the face and runs out of the den back into the field, passing Ruth along the way.

Meanwhile, the Salmon family begins to worry because of Susie not returning home yet. Her father, Jack (Wahlberg), leaves to go look for her. Susie makes it into town and sees her father, but he does not see her. Susie instead runs home, but discovers the house empty. She enters the upstairs bathroom to find Harvey soaking in a bathtub. After discovering her charm bracelet hanging on the sink faucet, near a bloody shaving razor, Susie realizes that she never escaped the den and was instead murdered by Harvey.

As she screams in horror, she is pulled away into a surreal world that is neither heaven nor earth, but “The In-Between,” where she continues to watch over her loved ones. She is unable to let go of her life and family despite her new afterlife friend, Holly (Nikki SooHoo), urging her to move on.

The early, pre-murder scenes are the best part of the film, because they’re grounded in reality and show a deft touch in portraying the 1970s Pennsylvania home and school life of 14-year-old Susie Salmon. The costume and production design are all top notch.

The undoubted highlight of the film, however, is the performance of Saoirse Ronan. While there is strong support from McIver and Mark Wahlberg, it is Ronan who steals the show. Since her breakout performance in Atonement she’s demonstrated a remarkable dexterity with characters and accents. Susie gives her the opportunity to really stretch herself.

She’s required to play the ordinary and the extreme, and she nails every scene. Just watch her when she’s helping Jack finish his latest bottle boat. She conveys warmth, fascination and vitality, all while hardly uttering a word. Her performance will resonate with young teens, especially girls.

In 1941, Citizen Kane, an American drama film, was released. It starred Orson Welles who also directed it. Even today, movie magnates view ‘CK’ as one of the finest films in movie-making history. It was highly acclaimed for its music, its unique narration, and its ground-breaking cinematography.

Before the film was made, Welles was receiving accolades after his performances with the Mercury Players. He caught the attention of Hollywood moguls through his highly controversial radio program, War of the Worlds, in 1938. The next year he was signed on contract with RKO Pictures.

Although he was completely ‘untried’ as a film director, he was given a free hand to develop a story, pick the crew and cast, and even given ‘final cut’ privilege. After two disastrous first attempts, Welles and Herman Mankiewicz wrote the screenplay for CK.

Shooting took place in 1940, and RKO released it in 1941. It received no less than 9 nominations in the ensuing Academy Awards. To the delight of Orson Welles and Mankiewicz, CK received the award for Best Writing (Original Screenplay).

The film is a roman a clef, a story about real events and real people under the disguise of fictional characters. It looks at the life of Charles Foster Kane whose character is based on newspaper mogul, William Randolph Hearst, as well as on Welles’ life. When CK was released, Hearst was so irate that his newspapers were prohibited from even mentioning it.

Kane started his career in the newspaper publishing industry because he had a passion for journalism. However, over the years, this passion turned into a relentless quest for power. In almost every scene, the background, foreground, and all in between, are in focus. This was achieved by the cinematographer after experimenting with lights and lenses.

Another unusual element in the film was the manner in which low angle shots were utilized. This enabled ceilings to be visible in the background of many scenes. Because films were shot on sound stages at the time, it was not possible to show ceilings simply because sound stages had no ceilings.

The crew of Citizen Kane managed to achieve this effect by putting muslin cloth over the set to give the illusion of a ceiling. Hidden on top of the cloth were the microphones. They then dug trenches in the floor to enable the use of low angle shots. This is particularly evident in the scene when Kane and Leland meet after the election loss. His mother, Connie (Catherine Keener), invites her boyfriend (Mark Ruffalo) to dinner. Max gets upset with his mom for not coming to the fort he made in his room. He wears his wolf costume, acts like an animal, and demands to be fed. When his mother gets upset, he throws a tantrum and bites her on the shoulder. She yells at him and he runs away, scared by what just transpired. Max finds a small boat in a pond, which he gets into and departs.

Sailing across the ocean, Max eventually reaches an island. Still in his wolf costume, he explores the island and stumbles upon a group of six large creatures. One of them, Carol, is in the middle of a destructive tantrum while the others attempt to stop him. As Carol wreaks havoc Max tries to join in on the mayhem but soon finds himself facing the suspicious anger of the wild things. When they contemplate eating him, Max convinces them with a lie that he is a “great king with magical powers” capable of bringing harmony to the distraught group. They promptly crown him as their new king.

Soon after Max arrives, K.W. returns and Max declares a “wild rumpus”, in which the Wild Things smash trees and tackle each other, ending with them all piling on one another then going to sleep, with Max at the center of the pile. Carol takes Max on a tour of the island, showing him an intricate model Carol built out of sticks, depicting what he wishes the island looked like.

Inspired by this, Max orders the construction of an enormous and fantastical fort, with Carol in charge of the construction. As Max bonds with Carol, K.W. brings her owl friends Bob and Terry to the nearly completed fort. Disagreement ensues again, as Carol feels the togetherness of their group is threatened by these outsiders. To release their frustrations, Max has the tribe divide into “good guys” and “bad guys” for a dirt-clod fight, but Alexander is hurt during the game. Tension mounts between the wild things as it becomes increasingly obvious Max favors some of the wild things over others.

Eventually, Max finds Alexander, who is still hurt from the dirt-clod fight, alone in the fort that they built and has a conversation with him. Carol becomes enraged and rips Douglas’ arm off, though only sand pours out of the wound. He then chases Max into the forest and threatens to eat (thereby killing)him.

The Lovely Bones is taken from the book by the same title, written by Alice Sebold. Jackson seems to have imbued his carefully chosen cast with the characters they quickly embody. None makes mistakes, pulling moviegoers into their plight.

Max, the lead human character, can interact with the creatures, lean on them, even ride on top of one, and it wouldn’t have looked as true and genuine had Jonze opted for Computer Generated Image all the way. Instead, Jonze blended live-action state of the art puppetry with computer animation, digitally enhancing each creatures face to make each more expressive, and make the facial movements closer to human reactions. Seeing Sendak’s illustrations spring to life with real personalities is just breathtaking to watch and incredibly moving.

Max is a nine year old boy with a vivid imagination who’s going through a rough time at home. He’s ignored by his sister, picked on by her friends, and even his overworked mom Catherine Keener loses patience with him when he acts like a beast while wearing his wolf suit. Max thinks no one is on his side after he’s sent to bed without any dinner, and, without putting any thought into it, he runs away from home in the black of night.

After sailing across a storm-tossed sea and climbing a steep cliff, Max finds himself in a forest filled with strange creatures. These huge beasts are intensely emotional, completely unpredictable, and Max finds them totally irresistible. The Wild Things need a leader and Max, a sharp boy for only being nine years old, proclaims himself a king. The creatures immediately crown him their king, and Max feels as though he belongs with this bizarre tribe of towering beasts more so than he belongs with his human family.

His family ignores him, misunderstands his intentions, but these Wild Things consider him a like-minded fellow. But after time spent with his new adopted family, Max begins to understand that being a king is hard work and that dealing with his new family is just as difficult as figuring out his relationships with his mom and older sister.

Alice Sebold’s astonishingly successful 2002 debut novel opens in 1973, with 14-year-old Susie Salmon telling us she’s been raped, murdered and dismembered. She watches from heaven as her family struggles to cope with her loss, and tentatively begins to probe for answers to the unsolved case.

The two respondents offer very different opinions of the film, with the first describing the CGI “heaven” from where Susie watches over her family with some degree of rapture, while the second reviewer bemoans the jolting shifts between the afterlife and everyday reality, where her father and mother are played by Mark Wahlberg and Rachel Weisz. The film is due in cinemas in December in the US and January in the UK.

Then there’s the old man who’s grown into a cynical nihilist after so many years of violence. He uses a butterfly net to deflect bullets, and has no other possessions in the world.

After being betrayed by his lover, El Topo goes into a coma for several years, sleeping in the heart of a mountain, a cocoon of sorts, as he will eventually be reborn as a savior. He dons a priestly robe and shaves his head and attempts to redeem himself, but must first find the same forgiveness in his heart that he seeks from the world.

El Topo reunites with his now-adult son, who has found that the life of a holy man comes with just as many difficulties as the life of a gun fighter. Life is full of difficulties and violence no matter who you are.

The movie is deeply rooted in religious symbolism. There are so many different religions on display here, Buddhism, Catholicism, Judaism, that it really becomes its own thing, almost its own religion in a sense. Whatever it is, it’s all Jodorowsky.

The movie feels incredibly eerie, it is incredibly violent, shocking, bizarre, it may offend you, but it will also enlighten you, it will elevate you and it will educate you. It is a story of hatred and of love, of revenge and of peace and forgiveness. The trailer says that it is “The single greatest experience of your life”, and while that may be a little bit hyperbolic, you’ve never seen a movie quite like this.

Loudmouth Judith (Catherine O’Hara, who really stole the show) is Max’s brazen independence. Introverted Ira (Forest Witaker), the painfully obvious object of extrovert Judith’s affections, is Max’s artistic ideals.

Shy Alexander (Little Miss Sunshine’s Paul Dano) is Max’s longing to be heard, as well as his fragile naivete. And the gentle KW (Lauren Ambrose) is the feeling of maternity that Max has not felt from his own mother. As soon as he discovers all the fragments, he realizes that there is more love to be had at home than he realized.

the movie has some very peppy dialogue that made me chuckle and even guffaw a few times, especially some of the ideas that Max comes up with. Carol’s workshop is wonderfully constructed, representing his dream of a peaceful kingdom free of the sadness that traps his heart and mind. The rest of the visuals, namely the huts that the monsters live in and the monsters themselves, are beautiful, whimsical, and gritty all at the same time.

Wild Things is an altogether darker, colder picture: a film about the way children can lose their fear of the world only by losing their innocence. Jonze’s design extrapolates the book very cleverly. Profoundly beautiful and affecting, Where the Wild Things Are is a breath-taking act of artistic transubstantiation.

In his transcendent movie adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are, Spike Jonze not only respects the original text but also honors movie lovers with the same clarity of vision. This time everything works, from tip to tail, from the moment in the prologue at which director Spike Jonze freezes the action (Max, fork in hand, tearing after the family dog) to the final scene’s hard-won reconnection between Max and his mother at the kitchen table.

Warner Bros. Pictures should be applauded for such a nervy and breathtaking achievement – the rare adaptation that goes deeper, not dumber, in its page-to-screen translation of a children classic.

Even as Peter Jackson creates his characteristic vistas of visual splendour on screen, once again.

Quite metaphysical & The Lovely Bones does have a unique charm of its own. More importantly, it is a story well told.
