A Lot Goes Into Being A Rural Heritage Speaker

Being a rural heritage speaker takes a special sort of person. Good speaking skills alone will not fulfill all that this job requires. This needs someone with a deep understanding of the importance of the position. The rural lands of America depend upon it. Overall, there is a lot that depends on these speakers, entire communities even.

There is a degree of speaking involved in a formal political arena. An example of this could be a town hall meeting, or town council. In some rare cases this can go as far as state government. The reasons behind this is needing to convey the reasons for keeping land undeveloped. Protecting rural communities from being overrun with large businesses that would push smaller family run businesses out.

Given the reasons for speaking, the speaker most definitely needs to be able to convey passion. An informative talk about how things will be changed with development is not going to do the job. There has to be passion in order to really reach the audience and cause them to feel a connection with the community in question.

Large scale developers have money and influence on their side. When they decide that they want to build somewhere it takes a lot of effort in order to bring the plans to a halt. In many respects this is an uphill battle. Sticking up the for the little guy is in the job description. Being armed with information is a must.

A good knowledge of the history of the area is a must. When questions are asked they should be answered quickly and accurately. The more the speaker fumbles, the more the cause stands to loose. Aside from the history, current connections to the area is also vitally important. It must be clear that the importance of the land does not all lie in history books. There must be some current purpose being served by it remaining undeveloped.

The ideal person for the job must be free of any potential conflict of interest. If a person is speaking for this cause, he or she should have no ties to the developers wanting access. The person should also not have a vested interest in the community remaining as is. This should be a person that can stand in a completely neutral light.

Anyone stepping up to the plate for this position deserves a lot of respect. A rural heritage speaker carries far more responsibility than the role initially appears to have. This is no insignificant task by any stretch of the imagination.
